Martha Winter studied in London, Falmouth and Norwich, where she gained a BA Hons Fine Art degree in 1988.
The minimalist art and modern architecture of her student years provided a visual language, and the raw power of the Norfolk coast gave her an awareness of nature and physical processes at work. These remain important influences.
Her geometric shapes were at first drawn on flattened soil in her studio. Later works, on a larger scale, were produced outdoors, digging and seeding to produce shapes and textures. Photographs provided a permanent record.
To present her raw materials directly, rather than via the camera, Martha now uses natural materials meticulously chosen and organised to create heavily textured geometric surfaces that provoke contemplation on the similarity and complexity of mathematical patterns in our universe.
