“It is signs which have no exact meaning that provoke a magic sense." Joan Miro
Helen's work concerns language and image - the idea that words are images - and attempts to create visual equivalents to sensations evoked by particular words or phrases.
Poetry, music and place are usual starting points. She makes no preliminary drawings; chance and the nature of her materials dictate direction. The aim is always to suggest narratives and associations that arise intuitively rather than from reason.
Helen works with gouache and found materials, built up on layers over a painted surface then reworked with combinations of paint, pencil, pen and ink. The grid format provides a formal structure and allows endless permutation of composition, colour, texture scale and content - perhaps as much musical as visual.
