Mary Jolley’s early work was representational – studies of Cardiff street people and the Welsh landscape. Her present style developed during visits to France, where she now has a home at Montcuq in the Lot valley in the southwest.
“For me the paintings have a strong emotional content and capture the sensations of the moment in a way a photograph or a representational painting never could. I am particularly moved by the sky’s light and colour, which in the South of France ranges from turquoise to the most intense blue. In Montcuq the houses are built from local limestone and the variation of blues and greys continues to be an enduring image of many of my pictures.”
Mary was born in Monmouth. She now divides her time between Montcuq and her studio in Cardiff. Her pictures are to be found in private collections around the world.
