Early enthusiasm for Japanese woodblock prints led Ian Phillips first to a degree in illustration and graphic design at Leicester, then to a career as a freelance illustrator in Brighton and London, during which time he developed the method of multicolour hand-printing he now uses. This is essentially the same as that used by the 19th century Japanese masters, but using lino rather than wood to create the printing surface.
Ian moved to Machynlleth in 2001 and the space, shapes and colours of the Welsh landscape now drive his work forward toward his aim of combining the simplicity and elegance of Japanese prints with the expressionistic drama and abstract patterns of western printmaking.
