“The inherent possibilities of Pembrokeshire produced a turning point in my work in the late 70s: I returned to painting landscapes. Now, although much of my work involves large-scale often figurative canvasses, I still continue to explore natural imagery, for I consider it important to ‘keep my feet on the ground’ and find refreshment for the eye.
“My palette has become increasingly vivid, relying on pure colour. I return to a handful of motifs cyclically, finding new harmonies as the seasons turn. It is the power, the energy, of light that I try to reinvent using complementary hues to produce visual vibration rather than to record the Impressionists' fleeting effects. The search for light is paramount; light that bursts through a leafy canopy or gilds the Preseli hills at evening, or the constant gentle light of my studio, soft on a model’s cheek or hair.”
