About the house
Probably built in the mid 1700s, the house is one of few remaining in
Pembrokeshire to still have its original Chinese Chippendale staircase
extending up into the attic. As for who lived here and what the house
has been used for, the earliest details we can find date back to
1784/85 when Henry and Anne Williams and their young family moved in
after their farmhouse at Upper Treginnis had been completely destroyed
by fire. The Williams set up what became known as 'Old Shop' next door
at number 16, and both premises stayed in the family's hands for some
80 years.
In more recent times, what is now St Davids Studio Gallery has been
temporary accommodation for naval personnel stationed at Brawdy, a
family home, solely business premises and, as it is has been since we
moved here in 2001, combined business and domestic premises.
When we moved in, the building was suffering more than a little from
damp but removal of modern materials and renovation with traditional,
lime-based mortars and washes has brought about a great improvement.
We had good advice from many quarters, particularly Mike Faulkner
(07788694324) who masterminded most of the restoration.
