David Whiley, a largely self-taught painter, lives high in the Shropshire hills where an enthusiasm for fell running, walking and cycling bring him into close contact with nature and the landscape in all its moods.

He believes that "landscape paintings should be about, not of, a place and time - the expressive reaction to landscape as well as a representation of it."  His paintings capture the effects of weather and light and their interaction with landforms.

He generally works in watercolour, gouache and ink on heavyweight paper.  Based on sketches and photographs made outdoors, his paintings are usually completed in the studio where the work can develop over time.
